Beaminster Tennis Club will be closed until January 3rd for much needed deep cleaning of the courts.
In completely unrelated news the club will also be running a spot the difference competition to see if the empty unused courts look any different to most other weeks. Prizes include a Beaminster Tennis Club cagoule, an ‘it’s going to rain’ barometer and free annual membership of the club WhatsApp group.
The club would like to thank all members for an excellent years tennis, wishing you all a Happy Christmas and see you on the (clean) courts in the New Year. Here’s 2024’s rally of the year:
The chairman and ex-chairman of Beaminster Tennis club came closer than ever before to going to rival club Bridport last night due to a lack of positive response on the WhatsApp group until 5:37pm. The club session started at 6pm. Due to a late flurry of interest by a lapsed member, the acting team captain and a stalwart member, the day was saved - or at least postponed - and a fairly good evening's tennis ensued.
Given our small membership we have a really good turnout from all our members and yet... and yet if you want to play regular tennis, particularly on dark winter nights it becomes harder and harder to guarantee a decent game at the club.
So this is a message to all members - if you want the club to continue please support the club in any way you can, primarily by turning up to all the club sessions and making yourself available for all the matches you possible can. And to the wider community, if you want to preserve the sporting facilities of Beaminster, you have to use them. Spread the word to anyone who might be interested!
The annual Beaminster Tennis Tournament was eventually held on the 15th September 2024, rearranged from the previous week due to iffy weather and so the turnout was slightly smaller than expected. These things are normally about as much fun as trying to sh*t out a hedgehog but this year Diana had brought in Hannah, an external tennis tournament organiser to arrange this years event. It was clear from the offset that she had a system and it worked! It's not clear if this made it more or less fun but the level of quibbling was possibly slightly less than other years. Thanks Hannah! We played 4 or 5 limited games each, with sudden death deuce and by the end of it all some of us had played some quite good tennis. However, it wasn't completely clear who had won what, especially as we had one man playing as a woman due to an uneven representation of the sexes. It turned out the winners were actually Andrea and Jonathan who we think most people would agree were deserved victors. It also put to rest the sad day, years ago, when Andrea won on her birthday but Glenys made up some bizarre rule where she didn’t win or something (according to Andrea).
There was a bonus prize match at Diana’s private court which she was kind enough to let us play on between the top 4 scoring players. Unfortunately after losing 2 balls almost immediately and the other balls bouncing funny, everyone lost interest quite quickly and when we couldn’t remember the score and started feeling really hungry we all ran for the picnic. The food was beautifully laid out on tables on Diana's lawn with enough places to accommodate a large wedding. Even the wasps were impressed. Everybody contributed towards the food with mostly pasta dishes, chicken parts, gorgeous salads and one of Archie's legendary cakes - oh and of course Diana's alcoholic's trifle which we were all encouraged to try. We'd like to thank everybody who came and for making the effort to be extra sociable but we'd especially like to thank Diana, without whom the event would have undoubtably never happened.
Unfortunately the day did end on a slightly sour note when Gavin got into Gordon's Micra, slammed the door and accidentally knocked his left over pasta salad onto the floor, smashing the plate and bowl and somehow damaging the hallowed club cup. Diane (the other one - not Diana) and Susan heard the commotion and were relieved to learn no-one had been hurt or anything of real value had been damaged. As luck would have it though, we bumped into local hero Theo, Diana’s neighbour, a master craftsman and a wizard with all things metal who generously offered to repair the trophy - he said he thought he could do it and we joked that we’d tell the club it was stolen by thieving Traveller b***ds. All in all - a slightly confusing day.
Congratulations to Archie for being most improved player (Tom is set to win next year or at least get voted in as our next Chairman) and to Colin for winning Gavin's made up 'Lifetime Achievement Award' - for celebrating a ‘winning’ shot so much that he didn’t notice Gavin's incredible 'ge't which was actually the winning point! However in the end, it was Doris the dog that everyone agreed was probably the best behaved of all.
Club Mascot Colin has returned from injury after a few weeks away. He didn’t seem too rusty and we have a sneaking suspicion he may have been having secret lessons somewhere. Welcome Back! Hopefully he will be around more often and will be available for exhibition matches, book signings and words of wisdom. What do you think of that?
STOP THE PRESS!! As of... now!! - club nights are changing! This is great news for anyone who also likes to play table tennis on a Thursday. No change for Sundays. Don't forget to ask to be in our WhatsAp group if you are really keen for a game.

Homeless ex-chairman and Frankie Boyle impersonator Gavin Morris was presented with a loaf of bread to tide him over for the next few days after standing down as Chairman. In their absence Diane Spencer was voted as new Chairman and her sister Sue is our new secretary. Congratulations on your appointments, we look forward to seeing how you drive the club forward.
Our annual tennis tournament was played on Sunday August 20th. Congratulations to Christina for making the Tiramisu. There was also crumble, Eton Mess, a variety of quiches, cheeses, salads and quite a lot of other food! Even Champagne provided by Diana. That's the way it is here at Beaminster Tennis Club. If anyone wants to buy Diana's house get in touch, we'll give you a good deal 😉 Oh there was also a bit of tennis with the bureaucracy superbly handled by Sharon. Well done to Janice for becoming Ladies Club Champion and less well done to Gavin - you were just lucky. If anyone wants to join one of the more dysfunctional tennis clubs in the country, Get In Touch! Shout out to Gordon for the dodgy line calls because he doesn't like Rob.
Quick before it starts raining again...

We have been following the advice of the LTA with regards to Covid-19, which up until now has permitted tennis to still be played (it was even being specifically encouraged by the government as a good example of exercise which met social distancing guidelines).
However, the advice from the LTA has now changed:
"Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday evening (23 March) all tennis facilities and courts should be closed, and tennis coaching and activity should be put on hold with immediate effect."
We therefore have no option but to close the courts until the situation changes.>
